Tuesday August 30th The clinical aspect of nutrition: nutrition & cancer This morning you will learn all about one of the hot topics in nutrition: the influence of food on cancer. For decades, many studies have come out telling us to eat certain products and not to eat others, just to prevent the growth of cancer. More recently, interesting developments have taken place saying food could also influence existing cancers, and that specific food habits could contribute to the healing process.
The clinical aspect of nutrition: the metabolic syndrome This afternoon will be held in the Boerhaave Museum in the city center of Leiden. The Boerhaave Museum is the National Museum of the History of Science and Medicine. Besides the afternoon lectures, you will get a tour through the museum. The lectures will be on obesitas and other illnesses that often accompany obesity, together called the metabolic syndrome. The topic will be dealt with from different aspects.
Wednesday August 31st The sociological aspect The morning will be on global aspects of nutrition. There will be lectures on the ‘double burden of disease’ of developing nations and about the sustainability of food production.
The afternoon will be filled by an interactive debate on where the responsibility for healthy nutrition currently lies and where it should be: the industry, the government or the individual?
Thursday September 1st Concluding morning Participants will present what was learnt in the Monday afternoon parallel sessions. Furthermore, the organising committee will present the results of an online survey about the topic of nutrition in European medical curricula.
A plenary closing ceremony will be held, during which participants and lecturers will be thanked for their contribution, receive their certificates and we will sum up all that was learnt.
