‘Your vagina tells you life story, there is no doubt about that’ is how Eve Ensler started her Vagina Monologues in the year 1996.

5 years later, this theatre play was brought to the Netherlands. Now, almost 15 years later, members from IFMSA-NL picked up the play to let it be performed on International Women’s Day.

vaginamonologenOn the 8th of March in 2011 International Women’s Day (IWD) will celebrate her 100th birthday. Clara Zetkin launched the first IWD in 1911, a year after a successful conference for working women in Copenhagen. The history of IWD goes back in time though. In the year 1869, a -male- politician suggested that women should have voting right too. This idea was being picked up by New Zealand, and in 1893 the first women on earth could enjoy their franchise.

In 1975 IWD was officially recognized by the UN, in some countries this day eventually became a national holiday. The day has many goals, as the UN states: ‘to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.’ It also is a day to unite and look back on what women have achieved in their struggle to equity and development.

But how does this bring us to the Vagina Monologues? As mentioned before, IWD is a day to unite and look back, but it is also a day to unite and to look around. There are still so many places in the world where women don’t have the same rights as men, where women suffer from being women, places where young girls are forced to marry and where authorities fail to enforce laws to protect these women.

  • In Sweden, 76% of mothers work, the highest percentage in the developed world
  • But also, Sweden leads Europe in the number of reported rapes - more specifically Rape Jihad
  • For Afghanistan women there is no difference between betraying your husband or being raped; for both incidents you end up in jail.
  • Happily, political committees are taking actions, and making women aware of their basic right: not to have to endure abuse.

The Vagina Monologues is a selection from over 200 interviews with women about their vagina. Eve Ensler began the interviewing with women from Bosnia, who were raped during war. This led to a personal mission, letting as many women as possible talk about their vagina. Young, old, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, coloured or not, tall, small, women from Texas, New York or Minnesota, married, lesbian or widows, high educated and low educated; all of them talked to Eve.

The monologues are humorous, touching and most of all intriguing because of the truth that lays behind them. The monologues give ear to the every vagina-subject you can think of: hair, prostitution, pleasure, everything from something terrible like rape to something beautiful as birth.

The Vagina Monologues will be performed in every medical faculty city by actresses or student-actresses, the gain of the tickets will be donated to Beads4Education! This charity ensures education for young girls, as the UN chose ‘education’ as the theme for 2011. Everybody is welcome, men and women from all faculties. Please email iwd@ifmsa.nl to see when the play is in your town, for other information or to order tickets!
