Op 8 mei werd het Global Health Education Congress gehouden, een congres voor geneeskundestudenten over gezondheidszorg wereldwijd en de rol die artsen hierbij kunnen spelen.

Op 8 mei wordt het Global Health Education Congress gehouden, een congres voor geneeskundestudenten over gezondheidszorg wereldwijd en de rol die artsen hierbij kunnen spelen. Dit wordt georganiseerd door de International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations - The Netherlands (IFMSA-NL) in samenwerking met Wemos, de Johannes Wier Stichting en de Vereniging voor Gezondheidszorg en Vredesvraagstukken (NVMP).

Thema’s

Tijdens het congres worden drie internationale gezondheidsthema’s besproken: 

1. De relatie tussen sociaal-economisch ontwikkeling en gezondheid.

2. Het recht op gezondheid en de verantwoordelijkheid van overheden en maatschappelijke organisaties.

3. De bijdrage die geneeskundestudenten aan gezondheid wereldwijd kunnen leveren, nu en in hun toekomstige loopbaan.

Programma

Het dagvoorzitterschap is in handen van prof. dr. Henk Groenewegen. Het congres start met drie lezingen door:

• Professor Joep Lange, hoogleraar inwendige geneeskunde AMC-UvA, aidsexpert, oprichter van de PharmAccess Foundation en directeur van het Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development;

• Mike Rowson, senior teaching fellow Centre for International Health and Development, University College London; voormalig directeur van gezondheidsorganisatie Medact en eindredacteur van het alternatieve wereldgezondheidsrapport Global Health Watch 2005-2006; en

• Rajat Khosla, Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Policy Coordinator bij Amnesty International in Groot-Brittannië en voormalig medewerker van de vorige Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health van de Verenigde Naties.

Tijdens de lunch is er gelegenheid om nader kennis te maken met IFMSA-NL, Wemos, de Johannes Wier Stichting en de NVMP. Aansluitend worden interactieve workshops over de drie thema’s gehouden, gefaciliteerd door workshopleiders en artsen die in het buitenland hebben gewerkt. De dag wordt afgesloten met een plenaire discussie met de sprekers van het ochtendprogramma.

Praktisch

Het congres vindt plaats op zaterdag 8 mei 2010 in het VU te Amsterdam (hoofdgebouw). Het programma start om 10.30 uur (registratie vanaf 9.45 uur) en eindigt om 16.30 uur met een borrel. Kosten voor deelname inclusief lunch zijn 5 euro.

Inschrijven voor de workshops gebeurt op de dag zelf.

Global Health Congress for Medical Students

Are you interested in finding out what's happening in health and healthcare worldwide? Would you like to hear what you can do to help and explore beyond the borders of your own country? If so, this congress could be of interest to you.

The International Federation of Medical Students' Associations – The Netherlands (IFMSA-NL) is organising a Congress on Global Health and the role played by doctors, in collaboration with the Dutch Medical Association for Peace Research (NVMP), the Johannes Wier Foundation and Wemos.

Topics

During the congress three Global Health topics will be discussed:

1. The relation between health and socio-economic development.

2. The right to health and the responsibility of governments and civil society organisations.

3. How can medical students contribute to Global Health, both now and in their future career.

Programme

Chair: Henk Groenewegen, MD, PhD.

The morning programme consists of three lectures held by:

• Joep Lange, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam. Professor Lange is an AIDS expert, founder of the PharmAccess Foundation and director of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development.

• Mike Rowson MSc, senior teaching fellow at the Centre for International Health and Development (CIHD) of the University College London (UCL). He is a former Executive Director of Medact, the global health charity and was also co-managing editor of Global Health Watch 2005/6.

• Rajat Khosla, LLM. Consultant United Nations Population Fund in Bangkok. Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Policy Coordinator with Amnesty International in the United Kingdom and former Senior Research Officer to the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health.

During the lunch break there will be opportunity to meet the IFMSA-NL, Wemos, the Johannes Wier Foundation and the NVMP. After the lunch break interactive workshops will be held, directed by discussion leaders and Medical Doctors. The congress will be rounded off by a plenary discussion by the speakers of the morning programme.
